The route leaves the forest and traces the beach toward Skuna Bay. To bypass the headlands that border the beach, leave the beach and tackle the steep, sometimes muddy climb that leads to a forest trail (trail entrance is marked with buoys). Tip: The fixed ropes in the trees can be used to hang bear bags. If you plan to spend the night here, camp above the driftwood and nearby tide pools. Note: Unflagged trails are usually black bear trails.Īfter hiking less than an hour through the forest, you’ll catch the first glimpse of the ocean at Third Beach (also called First Beach). Look for surveyor’s tape (plastic ribbon) that flags the best route for hikers. Pick up the trail at the southern end of the lagoon and head south to Third Beach. "Things like that along the way have made the job really rewarding."Ĭongressional districts are redrawn every 10 years. "Most recently what was very rewarding was to be able to help connect some local constituents that were in Ukraine at the time of the invasion with the State Department, so that they could get to safety," Vela said. I think that makes up about 50 to 60 percent of the work equity in a congressional office. That's pretty much every congressional office, the kinds of things people never see. That's on top of the thousands of cases his "very efficient staff" has worked on over the years for individual constituents, involving such matters as navigating Veterans Affairs, the IRS and immigration agencies, Vela said. Vela also worked with Elon Musk and SpaceX in 2014 to help bring the rocket company to Cameron County, and prioritized working with local universities and schools to maximize opportunities in cutting-edge science, technology, engineering and math fields.Īmong the other highlights of his career, Vela said, were being able to secure $24 million in federal money for a new terminal building at Brownsville South Padre International Airport and $13 million for structural needs at the Valley International Airport in Harlingen $4.3 million for an emergency operations center in Kleberg County millions of dollars in coastal restoration money stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill and tens of millions of dollars for drainage and storm-water projects to help prevent catastrophic flooding. "Those have been priorities all along the way, so it feels good to have succeeded on that front," he said. Vela said he's glad to be capping off his congressional career with two major wins: More than $100 million in federal funding for improvements to Cameron County's Gateway International Bridge and - announced just this week - $68 million for the Port of Brownsville to help pay for deepening the Brownsville Ship Channel. I think he's fully up to speed and ready to roll on all of that stuff." Back last year when I decided I wasn't going to run again, we started to talk to him and his staff about all the things we had worked on, like Port of Brownsville issues, some of the (international) bridge issues, SpaceX issues. "We've worked hand in hand pretty much on everything we've done. Vince and I have a personal relationship that probably goes back 20 years," he said. If that happens, TX-34 constituents can expect a high level of continuity from Vela's time in Congress, Vela said. "I think Vince is about 99.9 percent certain to be the member of Congress for TX-34 for the next two years," Vela said. While redistricting has made TX-15 more competitive for Republicans - he considers it a toss-up in the November election - that's not necessarily the case for TX-34, he said. Vela said the Republican party, which made gains in the Rio Grande Valley during the 2020 election, sees a TX-34 special election as a chance to take the seat away from Democrats, though he feels the seat is safe. "What I've heard is that Dan Sanchez, former county commissioner, is considering running for it," Vela said. Vela's longtime friend Vicente Gonzalez, currently representing Texas District 15 in Congress, is the Democratic candidate running for TX-34 in the November election but will not take part in any special election and instead will serve out his current term. His early departure will prompt a special election, the exact timing of which isn't set in stone and is Abbott's call to some extent. Vela, who announced a year ago that he would not seek reelection to the seat he's held since 2013, is leaving Congress before the end of his current term to take a job with the law and lobbying firm Akin Gump, headquartered in Washington D.C. "Please let me know how I can be of assistance during this transition." "It has been a profound honor to represent the people of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for the last nine years," he wrote briefly. Greg Abbott and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. has stepped down from his Texas 34 congressional district seat after sending resignation letters today to Gov. 31-It's official: Brownsville Democrat Filemon Vela Jr. Macro indicates the environmental scanning example of the factors which are not under the control of the company. However, the factors included in the micro sector includes suppliers, organisation, market, competitors, industry, consumers, etc. Micro refers to the individual company atmosphere which can be controlled up to one extent affecting it externally. Strategic managers must focus on the present state and future positions. The factors are infinite therefore the organisation should be vigilant and adjust according to the changes. As competition adds up, the external environment becomes dynamic and plays a crucial role in long term plans. Now, the external environment talks about the outside walls of the company. As a result, the internal analysis identifies weaknesses and strengths within the company. This involves understanding and interpreting different resources like human resources( employee relation with management & other employees, management with shareholders, brand awareness), capital, technological, culture, objectives, corporate structure, value system, labour union etc. They lie inside the organisation and impacts the performance of the company as a whole. In fact, scansion explains how rhythm contributes to beauty, significance and meaning of a poem.Components of Environmental Scanning Internal environmentįirstly being an example of environmental scanning in strategic management is internal analysis. Moreover, it makes a poem pleasurable as well as more meaningful by marking the stressed and unstressed syllables. It also proves very helpful in determining the natural rhythm of a free and blank verse. Scansion demonstrates variation and regularity in poetry. This is the famous example of a blank verse, using unrhyming lines with iambic pentameter (ten syllables in a line and five are stressed). The force of those dire Arms? yet not for those He with his Thunder: and till then who knew Example #7: Paradise Lost (by John Milton)įrom what highth fal’n, so much the stronger provd In the first line, you can notice the use of caesura in the middle it breaks the monotony and creates a dramatic effect. In this example, the first two lines are using trochaic heptameter, while the final line is using dactylic tetrameter. Walcott has used mixed metrical pattern in this poem. L oosening the grip of their roots, till their hairy clods… Springs, the babble of swol len gul ches un der drenched ferns, Example #6: The Bounty (by Derek Walcott) The rhyme scheme of this poem is irregular and unpredictable, and in this stanza it is AAAB. This stressed syllable appears at the beginning and in the middle of the lines. Dactylic foot uses a stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables. This is a good example of dactylic dimeter with two feet in each line. Example #5: The Charge of the Light Brigade (by Alfred Lord Tennyson) The rhyme scheme of this stanza is ABCBB. The metrical pattern of this stanza is trochaic octameter in which eight stressed syllables are followed by eight unstressed syllables. “ tis some visi ter,” I mu ttered, “ tapping at my chamber door. While I nodded, nea rly napping, suddenl y there came a tapping,Īs of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. Over many a quaint and cu rious vo l ume of forgot ten lore, Once up on a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Example #4: The Raven (by Edgar Allan Poe) You can see the first, second and fourth lines have used iambic tetrameter, while the third line has used tetrameter. However, there is no strict meter, as it is a free verse poem. Though first two lines rhyme in this example. Example #3: Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town (by E.E Cumming) This pattern repeats five times, which means it is iambic pentameter with un-rhyming lines known as blank verse. These lines contained unstressed syllables followed by stressed syllables, which are underlined. Example #2: Twelfth Night (by William Shakespeare) The stressed and unstressed pattern of the syllables show that the poem has used iambic tetrameter with alternating iambic trimeter, while the rhyme scheme used is ABAB. In this example, strong or stressed syllables are underlined. Examples of Scansion in Literature Example #1: Hope is the Thing With Feathers (By Emily Dickinson) Scansion is also known as “scanning,” which is, in fact, a description of rhythms of poetry through break up of its lines or verses into feet, pointing the locations of accented and unaccented syllables, working out on meter, as well as counting the syllables. In literature, scansion means to divide the poetry or a poetic form into feet by pointing out different syllables based on their lengths. However, there is a 7-11 and a Village Inn restaurant within walking distance. If you’re without a rental car, there’s not much around the hotel. It’s right off the main airport road just 4 miles from Denver International Airport. The location of Hyatt House Denver Airport is perfect for late-night arrivals or early morning flights. In retrospect, I should have given up on the shuttle and just paid for a Lyft. In total, it took us an hour to get from the airport to the hotel. When it arrived, it was a van that wouldn’t fit us all. A crowd of 17 people were now waiting for the shuttle. They said it would arrive in 5-10 minutes. By the time we walked to that location, we should have only had a 10-minute wait.Īfter waiting for 40 minutes without seeing the hotel shuttle, I called the hotel again. The operator said the shuttle would meet us at Door 505, Island 3 in 15-20 minutes. Upon our arrival at the airport, I called the hotel to ask for a shuttle pickup. I picked Hyatt House Denver Airport because it has large rooms and a hot tub. So, I focused on the next nearest cluster of airport hotels. The on-site Westin Denver International Airport hotel was over my budget. However, since snow was in the forecast for the weekend and our visit was very short, I wanted to stay as close to the airport as possible. I visit Denver a few times a year, and over the past few years my family has preferred to stay downtown at the Grand Hyatt Denver. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to try another hotel on one of my trips to Denver: Hyatt House Denver Airport. Ī study by Michele Knobel and Colin Lankshear explored three characteristics of successful memes identified by Richard Dawkins (fidelity, fecundity, and longevity) in relation to Internet memes. Other memes, in contrast, have broader cultural relevance and can be understood even by those outside the subculture one would associate with the meme. Memes can involve in-jokes within online communities, which communicate exclusive cultural knowledge unbeknown to general users through this, a collective group identity can be built. This gives new meaning to the scene from the music video and blends political and cultural aspects of two different nations. For example, a meme may combine United States politician Mitt Romney's assertion of the phrase " binders full of women" from a 2012 US presidential debate with the Korean pop song "Gangnam Style" by overlaying the text "my binders full of women exploded" onto a frame from Psy's music video where paper blows around him. Intertextuality may be demonstrated through memes that combine different subjects or aspects of culture. Remix uses the original material of the meme, but alters it in some way using technology-based manipulation (such as Photoshop). Mimicry refers to reproduction of a meme in a different setting to the original, for example imitation of the " Charlie Bit My Finger" viral video by various individuals. The former refers to the tendency of a popular meme to become subject to parody and imitation, which may occur by mimicry or remix. Two central attributes of Internet memes are creative reproduction and intertextuality. For example, they often serve as simply light entertainment, but can also be powerful tools for self-expression, connection, social influence, and political subversion. There is no single format that memes must follow, and they can have various purposes. Internet memes are also seen as less conceptually abstract compared to their traditional counterpart. Though the terms are related, Internet memes differ in that they are often short-lasting fads, while traditional memes have their success determined by longevity. Internet memes sprout from the original concept of memes as an element of culture passed on from person to person for the former, this spread occurs through online mediums such as social media. They appear in a range of contexts (such as marketing, finance, politics, social movements, religion, and healthcare), and use of media from various sources can sometimes lead to issues with copyright. Memes are considered an important part of Internet culture. More recent genres include "dank" and surrealist memes, as well as short-form videos such as those uploaded on Vine and TikTok. With the rise of social media platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, memes have become more diverse and can spread quickly. The term "Internet meme" was formally proposed by Mike Godwin in 1993, with early memes including images and GIFs spread via messageboards, Usenet groups, and email. Characteristics of memes include their susceptibility to parody, their use of intertextuality, their propagation in a viral pattern, and their evolution over time. Inspired by the concept of memes proposed by Richard Dawkins in 1972, Internet memes can take various forms, such as images, videos, GIFs, and various other viral sensations. An Internet meme, commonly known simply as a meme ( / m iː m/, MEEM), is a cultural item (such as an idea, behaviour, or style) that is spread via the Internet, often through social media platforms. The majority of the items (87% in 2021) put in the Blue Bin that are supposed to be there (i.e. The City’s recycling rates overall and for plastics are actually quite high. While recycling rates vary across different sectors, it’s important to note that residential recycling rates are typically much higher than those in the industrial, institutional and commercial sector. Some statistics circulating over the past few years suggest that nothing actually gets recycled, and that plastics in particular have very low recycling rates. Last year, 100,939 tonnes of recycling collected through the Blue Bin program was sold to markets to be made into something new. The City manages recycling from all single-family homes, about 60 per cent of the multi-residential sector and a limited number of non-residential establishments, such as small businesses. How much of what is collected in the City’s recycling program gets shipped to market? Only a small portion of the City’s recycling (about 14% in 2021) goes overseas and when it does, it is done through reputable brokers to ensure it is being recycled. The majority of the material from the City’s Blue Bins (approximately 86% in 2021) goes to markets in Canada and the U.S. The City is fortunate to have access to a lot of domestic recycling markets and is still able to sell its material to be made into something new. If you’re wondering if it’s still worth it to recycle, it is, and it’s increasingly important to recycle right. Despite changes in global recycling markets that have resulted in an oversupply of recycling material, with fewer markets where some materials can be sold, the City of Toronto’s Blue Bin recycling program remains strong. Recycling helps to conserve natural resources, keep waste out of landfill and reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Why It’s Worth It to Recycle and Important to Recycle Right When in doubt about how to properly dispose of something, ask the Waste Wizard. Find out what is and isn’t accepted in the City’s recycling program below.
